PetGP is a brand new service set up by Vetsdirect which was set up in 2003 as a way for pet owners to get veterinary advice and peace of mind when they need it most.
Vetsdirect is now now the UK’s largest, most trusted helpline, with highly-trained vet nurses across the UK, working with a number of the country’s leading charities and insurers. It is therefor worth checking your pet insurance policy to see if you can already access our services.
All our nurses are registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), and you can talk to them any time of the day or night, 365 days a year.
When you call, you’ll be answered in seconds. Our nurse will talk you through a quick series of questions in order to understand your worries and to eliminate any life-threatening symptoms for your pet. After that, they’ll provide triage and be able to advise you about what you should do next.
PetGP isn’t here to replace your vet, who is essential to your pet’s health. But we can help you avoid unnecessary visits: in general, two out of every three cases we speak to don’t require an immediate trip to the vet. Simply calling our helpline could save you time, stress and even a significant amount of money, since the average vet bill is now £300.
Just as importantly, our nurses can identify if a situation is more serious. In that case they will advise you to go to the vet as soon as possible, which could even save your pet’s life.

The PetGP process
With over 10 years experience helping pet owners look after their pets, PetGP has developed a reliable process to ensure that we’ll give you a consistently high standard of advice every time you call us.
The RCVS is the regulator for the whole veterinary profession, and everything we do complies with their Code of Professional Conduct. For this reason, PetGP will triage, rather than diagnose, your pet’s condition.
All our calls are answered by RCVS-registered vet nurses, and every call is guided by a special protocol based on your pet’s symptoms. This allows our nurses to rule out life-threatening issues, provide you with instant peace of mind, and give you the best advice about what to do next.
Each of our protocols has been developed by PetGP’s veterinary director, a highly experienced RCVS-registered vet surgeon, and our senior nurses.
Calls to the PetGP helpline are monitored by our quality and training managers to make sure our nurses always follow these protocols and continually improve the quality of advice we can provide.
